Viniyoga

Barbara started practising yoga in 1984 with an interest in using yoga for physical and mental wellbeing and began teaching yoga in 1997 in London, where she was formerly living. During this time her interest grew in a particular yoga approach - viniyoga, inspired by the teaching of Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar in India and in the UK by Paul Harvey. This looks at how yoga can be adapted to the individual and emphasises the importance of the connection of mind and body through use of breath within yoga postures.

"I've always loved practising yoga postures - our bodies (including our digestion, circulation and breathing) work better with movement and there is a real sense of feeling physically good at the end of a Yoga practice. Over time, I've come to appreciate how yoga works with the mind too. Yoga and working with the breath not only makes you feel better physically but is a bit like mentally de-cluttering; letting go of a lot of accummulated thoughts and providing space for relaxing or thinking more clearly. At the end of a Yoga practice you should feel better than you did at the start. "

She is co-founder of Yoga Wellness, a group of Yoga therapists in the Chilterns area. Barbara is on the committee of the British Council for Yoga Therapy.
